History Of The Number: Reid’s 76

No Ravens player has worn No. 76 for more than two seasons, although one has been with Baltimore for eight seasons.

Confused?

Here’s a look at the history of No. 76 in purple and black:

2008 – 2009: G/T David Hale
The Ravens selected Hale in the fourth round of the 2008 draft. He was converting to center, where he was showing promise as a backup while contributing on special teams. That allowed Hale to play in 18 games in two seasons. However, Hale hasn’t played since colliding with Haloti Ngata during training camp last year, which led to him being waived and reaching an injury settlement.

2007: DE Amon Gordon
Gordon, currently of the Seattle Seahawks, has bounced around between five different teams. He spent one year in Baltimore after being signed to the practice squad in late November after Trevor Pryce went on Injured Reserve. Gordon was moved up to the active roster, and saw action in one game, in which he made three tackles. He didn’t make the final cut in training camp of 2008.

2003 – 2004: DT Jarret Johnson
Johnson was originally drafted by the Ravens as a defensive end, bulked up and moved inside to defensive tackle. That gave him No. 76, which Johnson wore for two seasons before converting to linebacker in 2005. Johnson was then assigned his current No. 95. Double J was a special teams player early on, playing in 31 games but starting just one in his first two seasons at defensive tackle.

2001: OL Erik Williams
After free-agent addition Leon Searcy went down with a knee injury, the post-Super Bowl Ravens found the veteran Williams to step into the right tackle spot. Williams had gone to four Pro Bowls during his 10 years as a Dallas Cowboy. “Big E” was in purple and black for nine weeks and saw action in five games. It was his final year in the NFL.

2000: DE Carl Powell
Powell came on at the right time, getting in on the Ravens’ Super Bowl season in 2000. Powell was signed out of the former NFL Europe’s Rhein Fire and played in two games for the Ravens. He went on to play for the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals for four more years.

1998: DE Kareem Robinson
The 6-foot-4 Tennessee-Chattanooga product came to the Ravens in the summer of 1998. He didn’t see any game action and was waived due to a knee injury.

1997: OL Alex Bernstein
Signed by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent, Bernstein spent much of his rookie season on Baltimore’s practice squad. He was brought up to the active roster briefly in December. Bernstein, who has the distinction of being one of the relatively few Jewish players to ever reach the NFL, was signed off the Ravens’ practice squad by the New York Jets the following season and left football by 2000.
